Talk about making a mess of things! The 2015 Stolen Car album, All in the Game, should have been a stonewall classic. We'd been playing together a while by then; the rhythm section of Oli Leonard and Aaron Griffiths was really starting to groove and the addition of Leon Maitreya on guitar and Dee McGruddy on harmony vocals really added some exciting new elements to the sound. Combined with Basia Bartz's signature violin playing and some of my best song-writing, we really had something going.
Without the budget for a big studio recording, I decided to record and mix the album myself (how hard could it be?? Answer: harder than you think !!). The results were less than stellar, and the album was not the triumph it deserved to be.
While my friend Justin Whittingham was mixing the Anything Goes album he remarked that he always thought that 'Elliott Sings Elvis' should have had a different drum beat to what was on the record. This new recording became the catalyst for the reworked album. Justin remixed the remaining tracks and the results are absolutely fantastic.
From the playful Elliott/All in the Game opening, right up to the twisted lullaby of Sweet Dreams, All in the Game is THE classic demonstration of the Stolen Car sound. There may only be one album, but sometimes that's all you need.
Also included is the bittersweet folk-pop HeartSongs EP from 2013; In The Morning in particular is essential listening.
